Reading your per-unit cost: the number that actually protects your margin
June 9, 2026 · 4 min read
Cost per tablet, not cost per bottle, is where independents win or lose. A short guide to buying generics with your margin in mind.
When you compare prices on generics, the bottle price can mislead you. A bigger bottle at a lower total price can still cost more per tablet than a smaller one — and per tablet is what actually flows through to your margin on every script you fill.
That’s why per-unit pricing matters so much for independents. Seeing cost per tablet, per capsule, or per unit lets you compare apples to apples across pack sizes and suppliers without doing mental math at the shelf.
It also protects you on the narrow-margin medications where a few cents per unit decides whether a script makes money or loses it. Those are exactly the items where a second source with transparent pricing earns its keep.
Our rule is simple: show the number you actually pay, per unit, before you buy. No surprises, no mystery minimums — just a price you can reason about.
